Imagine you’re driving along in the hot weather with your windows down because you’re not a fan of AC, listening to Kendrick Lamar’s Backseat Freestyle. Then you have thought.

Why don’t I write a song about exactly this? So then you do. And it gets a mention on the Rolling Stone India site with your photo in the featured image for the article.

Then a little while later you make a video to that song on your Iphone and edit it to look like this one below. Funny right?

Po Di Dhup/Winter Sun

The story of this song is explained in the intro. It literally happened that way. I was walking through the park, on my way to work, on a very cold winter’s day during the month of Poh, which is normally mid-December to mid-January. It was frosty on the grass, although the path seemed to glisten a little less. Probably from all of the people walking along it to get to and from places.

I could see my breath floating up in front of my face like a little cloud. Yet the sun was out and shining as hard as it could. Whenever it caught my face I could feel a touch of warmth in the otherwise cold environment.

I decided to write a song about how a person can be like the winter sun or po di dhup and heat you when it’s cold outside. I had the hook ready by the time I made it to the other side of the park. So in about 7 minutes.

And yes. I’ve misspelled the month of Poh in my song title. It should be Poh Di Dhup. It’s too late to change that now. Here’s the lyric video featuring me.

By the way it’s from the lunar Nanakshahi calendar, which is in Punjabi. The Hindi version of the same month is Pausha. You can see the connection right?

Previous Music

Here are various tracks I’ve made over the years in varying styles.

Big City Pendu – Desi Rap

Coming to terms with dual identity and becoming comfortable in my own skin after speech therapy. A celebration of the city I live in and the villageism of my forefathers. Even if villageism isn’t a word, it makes for a decent tune.

Laya Laya – Vampire (Alt-Pop/R’n’B)

I’m 1 half of Laya Laya. This is our release from February 2020.

***

A couple of tracks from earlier solo projects.

Hold Your Hand – Vocal Drum & Bass

This is an exciting dancefloor banger with plenty of sing-along factor for cars and living rooms. I made it with a singer I met on Twitter! She followed me by accident. The rest, as the say, is history.

It is available to download and stream from all usual platforms such as Spotify.

N-u-k-l-e-a / Me Against The World

A couple of cheeky tracks made under another alias before the speech therapy madness. These were some of the tracks that got me artist of the week on the BBC Asian Network, here in the U.K.
